"An international, sweaty hellhole and exactly the cesspool I want to be locked in for 48 hours. The underground rave scenes of Berlin and New York have always fascinated me. I believe another version of myself exists somewhere in a piss-soaked club, where I've chewed my cheeks to pieces and some guy's kids have poured over my back. I am instigated and incited by rave culture and all that goes with it."

From Aotearoa New Zealand, Oli Mathiesen, Lucy Lynch and Sharvon Mortimer present the award-winning performance The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave: an endurance-based dance work set to Suburban Knight's thumping techno album Nocturbulous Behaviour.

The performance explores the movement language of techno and rave culture. Between three bodies, a contemporary nightclub emerges. Relentless movement, seamless and without pause, worked into every beat. The atmosphere and culture of a three-day rave are compressed into a streamlined, high art performance, in which you see before your eyes how three people completely demolish themselves.

Surrender to the pain, sweat and purging chaos. This is pure endurance as spectacle. The human body as victim of music. As a victim of passion. As a victim of our endless desire to achieve more. To win and win again.

CPR on repeat. The performance is come-up and come-down at the same time: it shows the beauty of feeling alive, but also all the consequences that come with it. It is an ode to the 3.5-year marathon in which societal morality and political structure began to falter. Our collective loss of work, time, love, sex, eating, fighting, cleaning, holidaying, sleeping, kissing, drinking, vomiting, everything, is made physical as an artefact of what we have endured as human beings.

And just as a love song can hit exactly that one relationship breakup, The Butterfly Who Flew Into The Rave is an acid house remix that screams "f**k you" loudly to the pandemic.
