History of ballroom
“Ballroom is a place where fashion, performance and activism meet. It is a form of protest and resistance, and a radical celebration of our existence and our right to claim occupy space.”

Ballroom was created for and by Black and Latinx trans women and queer people in the 1960s in Harlem, New York City. They opposed the established, often racist pageants by holding balls for, with, and by LGBTQIA+ people of color. During a ball, participants compete in various categories, including runway, realness, and performance. The categories are codes: realness is about surviving the code of power, runway is about claiming space.

Many people active in the ballroom scene are members of a ‘house’. Houses represent a group of people who have chosen each other as ‘family’, providing a safe home where there is space for every individual.

The Dutch Ballroom Scene
The culture traveled and reached the Netherlands, where the Dutch Ballroom Scene (DBS) began in 2013, when Amber organised the first ball in Rotterdam and founded The Living Room a year later. “With respect for the legacy of ballroom Mecca New York, we built our own community. Not in a very deliberate way, but because we felt there was a need for more safe spaces.” – Amber

The Netherlands now has a growing number of houses, which regularly come together at balls.

House of Vineyard
House of Vineyard, founded in 2014 by Legendary Mother Amber Vineyard, is the first ballroom house in the Netherlands. Known as the trailblazers of the Dutch scene, House of Vineyard explores the power of ballroom: education, building community, self-expression and resistance play a significant role.

The Living Room
The Living Room is home for all houses (and free agents *007*). Founded by Legendary Mother Amber Juicy Vineyard, for queer, trans, and gender-nonconforming beings, this is where you come to dive into ballroom culture, sharpen your tools, and practice the craft.

Here, ballroom is about telling your body’s story on your terms, carrying the foundations, and last but not least, finding your people. Whether you’re walking into your first class or preparing for battle – you’re in community.

The workshops
Five evenings in Venlo, guided by the Legendary Mother Amber Vineyard together with other members of the House of Vineyard. Learn the essence, explore different categories, refine your performance, and build your presence. Join one or more workshops and decide for yourself whether you step onto the floor at the SHOWDOWN.

The workshops are OTA — Open To All. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience, gender identity, sexual orientation or background. But make no mistake about whose Living Room this is. This is a space for queer and trans people first. If you’re here as an ally, you’re a guest – and guests respect the house.

This is a learning place, a healing place; a space we make together. Whatever you’re bringing: curiosity, hunger, fear, fire – bring it. This space is for us. If you’re here to learn, grow and respect that, you’re welcome in The Living Room.

History of ballroom
“Ballroom is een plek waar mode, performance en activisme samenkomen. Het is een vorm van protest en verzet, en een radicale viering van ons bestaan ​​en ons recht om ruimte op te eisen en in te nemen.”

Ballroom ontstond in de jaren zestig in Harlem, New York, voor en door Zwarte en Latinx trans vrouwen en queer personen. Zij verzetten zich tegen de gevestigde, vaak racistische schoonheidswedstrijden door balls te organiseren voor, met en door LHBTQIA+-personen van kleur. Tijdens een ball wordt er tegen elkaar gestreden in verschillende categorieën, zoals runway, realness en performance. Deze categorieën fungeren als codes: ‘realness’ draait om overleven binnen machtsstructuren, terwijl ‘runway’ staat voor het claimen van ruimte.

Veel mensen die actief zijn in de ballroom scene maken deel uit van een ‘house’. Houses zijn groepen mensen die elkaar als ‘familie’ hebben gekozen en bieden een veilige thuisbasis waar ruimte is voor ieder individu.

De Dutch Ballroom Scene
De cultuur verspreidde zich en bereikte ook Nederland, waar de Dutch Ballroom Scene (DBS) in 2013 ontstond toen Amber de eerste ball in Rotterdam organiseerde. Een jaar later richtte ze The Living Room op. “Met respect voor New York als bakermat van ballroom hebben we onze eigen community opgebouwd. Niet vanuit een vooropgezet plan, maar omdat we voelden dat er behoefte was aan meer safe spaces.” – Amber

Nederland kent inmiddels een groeiend aantal houses die regelmatig samenkomen bij balls.

House of Vineyard
House of Vineyard, in 2014 opgericht door Legendary Mother Amber Vineyard, is het eerste ballroom house van Nederland. Als pioniers van de Nederlandse scene verkent House of Vineyard de kracht van ballroom, waarin educatie, community building, zelfexpressie en verzet een belangrijke rol spelen.

The Living Room
The Living Room is een thuis voor houses (en free agents *007*). Opgericht door Legendary Mother Amber Juicy Vineyard voor queer, trans en gender-non-conforme personen, is dit de plek om je onder te dompelen in de ballroom cultuur, je skills aan te scherpen en te werken aan je performance.

Hier draait ballroom om het verhaal van je lichaam op jouw eigen voorwaarden te vertellen, de fundamenten in ere te houden en, niet in de laatste plaats, gelijkgestemden te vinden. Of je nu voor het eerst een les binnenstapt of je klaarmaakt voor de strijd: je maakt deel uit van een community.

Vijf avonden in Venlo, begeleid door Legendary Mother Amber Vineyard en andere leden van House of Vineyard. Leer de essentie, ontdek verschillende categorieën, verfijn je performance en bouw aan je presence. Doe mee aan één of meerdere workshops en bepaal zelf of je de vloer op gaat tijdens de SHOWDOWN.

Elke categorie is een kans om terug te claimen wat de wereld je heeft verteld dat niet genoeg of juist te veel was. Categorieën:

Ballroom 101 — Jouw introductie tot ballroom: waar de categorieën vandaan komen en waarom dit belangrijk is. Weet je niet waar je moet beginnen? Dan zit je hier goed!
Runway — Bring it to the runway! Leer de ruimte te domineren zonder een woord te zeggen: de walk, de shade, de pump, de pivot, de attitude.
Vogue Fem — Storytelling met je lichaam. Zacht en c*nt, dramatisch. Leer in het moment op je lichaam te vertrouwen.
Drags Face — Leer de tips & tricks om JOUW eigen drag gezicht en persona vorm te geven!
Body & SEXpression — De Kunst van verleiding en het verhaal van je lichaam op jouw eigen voorwaarden vertellen.
MAKE IT Fashion — Experimenteer, speel en ontdek hoe je met fashion iets nieuws creëert en jouw verhaal vertelt.

Open To All
De workshops zijn OTA — Open To All. Iedereen is welkom, ongeacht ervaring, leeftijd, genderidentiteit, seksuele oriëntatie en achtergrond.

Maar vergis je niet in wiens Living Room dit is. Dit is in de eerste plaats een ruimte voor queer en trans personen. Als je hier als ally (bondgenoot) bent, dan ben je te gast – en gasten respecteren de house.

Dit is een plek om te leren, een plek om te helen; een ruimte die we samen creëren. Wat je ook meebrengt: nieuwsgierigheid, honger, angst, vuur – neem het mee. Deze ruimte is van ons. Kom je om te leren, te groeien en dat te respecteren, dan ben je welkom in The Living Room.
